An-Nukat is one of the most important scholarly commentaries on Ibn al-Salah's Muqaddima , the foundational text of hadith terminology.
In it, Ibn Hajar Al Asqalani adds corrections, objections, replies and refinements on points where Ibn al-Salah, and sometimes al-Iraqi, left room for further study.
How the book came about
Hafidh Ibn Hajar read al-Iraqi's notes under al-Iraqi himself. During and after those lessons he recorded rare points, strong and weak objections, and their answers, sometimes in the margins of his copy and sometimes not at all. He later decided to gather these scattered notes into one work to complete the commentary on Ibn al-Salah.
Method:
Ibn Hajar marks the opening of each issue with ص for Ibn al-Salah's words and ع for al-Iraqi's, then follows with his own commentary. Some researchers count 129 notes on Ibn al-Salah alone. He uses them as starting points to establish rules and benefits across the hadith sciences, rather than only listing objections.
Hafidh As Sakhawi and Hafidh As Suyuti both report that Hafidh Ibn Hajar did not complete the book. The surviving manuscripts end at the twenty-second type - المقلوب ( Al Maqlub ), and the Yemeni copy stops even earlier, during the discussion of المدرج (Al Mudraj ) Even so, it remains among the most useful works for advanced students and scholars of hadith
Later scholars relied on it heavily, including As Sakhawi in his book Fath al-Mughith , As Suyuti in his book Tadrib al-Rawi and As San'ani in his book Tawdih al-Afkar
About this edition
Dr. Maher Yasin al-Fahl, a well-known specialist in hadith, edited the book and wrote a scholarly introduction on Ibn Hajar and the work.
